BURNS SUPPER

What a turnout! We were sold out of tickets for our yearly celebration of our bard Robert Burns!
On the 21st of January friends old and new came along to celebrate with an evening of feasting and blethering!
Mrs Mairi McRobert welcomed everyone along and introduced Mr Alec Cairns as Master of Ceremonies. Alec is a very informative and humorous speaker and was exactly what was needed to set the tone for the evening. Without ado he said the Selkirk Grace and everyone sat to enjoy the traditional Scotch Broth. Next came the magnificent beast himself, The Haggis! Carried by Fiona Christie and piped by Harrison Gibb (he has been our go to piper since he first started to play the pipes at around age 10! He’s not too much older now but his playing has come along in leaps and bounds) The Haggis was ably addressed by Mrs Dorothy Affleck, who wields the knife more than a little dramatically. Then dinner was served, Haggis, Mince, Neeps an’ Tatties and was much enjoyed by everyone. This was followed by the most amazing, boozy whisky trifle.
Mr Sandy McAllister was impressive in his knowledge of Robert Burns and gave a brilliant account of his life and times in the Immortal Memory.
Mr Ronnie Irving was to give the Toast to the Lassies, unfortunately he was very poorly and couldn’t make it on the night but Mr Richard Arkless stepped in and was a perfect replacement at very (about an hour) short notice. Thank you so much Richard.
Mrs Lindsay Gibb gave the Reply from the Lassies. She was very entertaining and didn’t let the gentleman away with anything. Lindsay is very much ‘girl power’ in a very good way.
After tea and coffee, cheese, oatcakes and shortbread, Alan and John provided the entertainment. Time to get up on the feet and work off the amazing dinner!
Once again, thank yous go out to the volunteers and staff of the kitchen and floor, without whom the show would not go on and to Terry and Karen Wildey who did a great job as bar staff for the evening. Needless to say there were a few cars left behind to be picked up at a later date!
One last word…. We also offer a vegetarian and gluten free option. So next year, book early and let’s us know your dietary needs.
