Sports Day 2012

The Day Centre has a sports day every year and because it was an epic year with the London Olympics and the Paralympics being held, it was decided to hold an Olympics of our own. So on the 10th of August, one of the hottest days so far we once again had Union Jack bunting festooning the hall but to be fair to the rest of the competing countries there were strands with many of their flags too. Members helped to also make and colour Olympic roundels which were strung on string and hung across the hall. They also helped to make golden rosettes which were given out to everyone who attended. The games started after lunch with a Walking Race followed by Javelin. These were kindly lent to us by The Ryan Centre. Then came the Canoe race. Yes Canoe! Cardboard cut-outs were made into canoe shapes then held around the waist, everyone loved this and so many participated it took 6 heats to finally get to the winner! After all that it was time for a well earned rest and a cool down with a choc-ice. Then it was back to the games, we started off with the hammer throw, a soft ball in a stocking, this also was enjoyed but the difficulty was getting it to go forward once it had been swung around your head 3 times. At one point it was very nearly out the window which cause a fair bit of hilarity. Then it was team games of Volley Balloon! This was trying to get the balloon on the floor not keeping it up. Lastly it was the Snail Race, slowest person wins, by the time the last competitor came in it was time for tea. At the end there was a trophy given to the person or as it happened persons who had entered the most events.  These were Mary McGarva, Anne McLean, Neil McRobert and David Robertson. A funfilled day was had by all.

Happy Birthday!

This year Coronation Day Centre proudly celebrated its 25th birthday. We marked the occasion on the 27th of July with a lovely lunch which was attended by 100 members and invited guests. The hall was beautifully decorated in purple and silver from the napkins to the table decorations of triple balloons and even the staff wearing purple.  The menu for the day was Potato Soup; Roast Beef with all the trimmings followed by dessert of mousse meringue with fresh strawberries and handmade chocolate swirls. There was also a good supply of wine for every table. There was also a birthday cake which this year was cut by Mr & Mrs Fraser. After the delicious food was finished the trophies for the January to June domino tournaments and also the Josie Adami Shield were given out along with the bowlers’ trophies. The entertainment for the afternoon was by Angus Dick whose mix of jokes and sing-a-long songs was much enjoyed with everyone joining in the singing and dancing.

Jubilee Party

Thank-you Card from Queen Elizabeth IIOn Monday 4th June we held our Jubilee Day. This was a whole day filled with fun and frivolity. Members were asked if they’d like to dress in red white and blue which they did with great delight. Various party hats were made by the members and they were worn with aplomb! The lunch that day was Lentil & Bacon Soup  followed by a Carvery then dessert was Cheesecake with fruit. The Centre itself was festooned in bunting, balloons and also, very kindly given to the Centre by The Town Kirk, a beautiful red white and blue floral display. Tom Agnew provided the entertainment, always a welcome face in the Day Centre, to which as usual there was singing along and dancing. The members and staff also sent an email to The Queen, wishing Her Majesty every blessing in this her milestone year. Long to reign over us. We received a reply and photograph in return.

Coffee Morning

On Saturday 26th May the Day Centre had its spring coffee morning and with tickets priced at only £2 it was a real bargain. A beautiful day dawned and it looked just perfect for folks to be out and about.

The proceedings started at 11am with an Announcement from Alisin thanking everyone for making the effort to come along and join the fun.

There was plenty of home baking, from yogurt loaves, scones and pancakes to marmalade and lemon curd.  Not forgetting the obligatory tablet. Some made by the staff from the kitchen and also some which was kindly donated.  All of it very tasty I might add! Especially the tablet! Thank you, Mairi.

There was a very good plant stall, all home grown, with all types of bedding plants and also some tomatoes and cucumbers these proved very popular too with the folks who came along.

The book, bric-a-brac, bottle and knitting stalls were well attired, with some knitted dolls, blankets and various bits and pieces and were also very busy. All the knitted and crocheted items again home made.

The teas, coffees and juice for the little folks with cream scones and shortbread, were served before the raffle concluded the morning.

The Doll and Pushchair was won by H Firman.

The Grocery Hamper was won by S Burton.

The Girls bike was won by P McGarva.

The Boys bike was won by N Mc Robert.

There were many smaller prizes, bottles of Wine, Bacardi, Whisky and Vodka, Boxes of chocolates. Soaps, tiles, candles, jewellery etc far too many to remember but congratulations to everyone who was lucky enough to win

Enough to say that the day was a roaring success, raising £1310, with all proceeds going to the Day Centre itself.

Lastly, a great big thank you, to all the volunteers who gave freely of their time and also to everyone who donated prizes and items to sell on the various stalls.
